As of May 1, 2025, the Mediterranean region has been designated as a Sulphur Oxide Emission Control Area (ECA) under Regulation 14 of Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention, as adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). According to this regulation, ships operating in the Mediterranean Sea are now required to use fuel with a sulphur content not exceeding 0.10%.

The purpose of this regulation is to reduce air pollution, protect human and environmental health, and promote a sustainable environment that supports the living conditions of various species. With the official declaration of this status, the Mediterranean Sea has been added to the list of globally recognized Emission Control Areas.

Companies operating in the Mediterranean region, particularly in the maritime transportation sector, must comply with the new fuel regulations to avoid penalties. Accordingly, they should review their contracts and obligations to ensure compliance.

Otherwise, companies may face operational restrictions, cancellation or non-renewal of certifications, and may be required to pay a fee for each ton of emissions exceeding the permitted threshold.
